John McMillan Scholarship
Award Amount
$3,000 per annum for 2 years

Description:

The purpose of the scholarship is to recognise academic achievement in subjects based on pure and applied Mathematics at the undergraduate level and supports students of Economics and Finance at the University of Canterbury.

Value/Benefits: Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, at a value of $3,000 per annum for two years

Level of Study: Undergraduate (Final Year) through to Honours or Master's (First Year)

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 31 October (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date)

Tenure: Two years

Number available annually: Two

Applicable enrolment during tenure: Full-time enrolment in the final year of a programme for an undergraduate degree with a major in either Economics or Finance (or both), followed by full-time enrolment in the first year of a programme for an Honours or Master's degree with a major in either Economics or Finance (or both)

Citizenship/residency requirements: Not applicable

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must be completing, or have completed, a programme that qualifies them for admission to the final year of a programme for an undergraduate degree with a major in either Economics or Finance (or both) at the University of Canterbury.

Selection will be based on:
  1. Academic achievement, with particular reference to the quality of achievement in courses in Economics/Finance, Mathematics, and Statistics, or other areas of applied mathematics.
Preference is given to applicants whose transcripts show a strong background in Mathematics or in Statistics, or other areas of applied mathematics.

Additional Information:

The University established the scholarship in 2016. It is awarded in memory of John McMillan, one of the University’s most distinguished Economics graduates and a professor of International Management and Economics at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. It replaced the John McMillan Scholarship in Economics and Mathematics, which had been first awarded for tenure in 2008.
