Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: The scholarship is tenable during full-time or part-time enrolment in a programme for a PhD involving a research project approved by the GRI and undertaken in association with the GRI.

The GRI established the scholarship in 2019. The GRI is a research institute at the University of Canterbury that is affiliated with the College of Science. The GRI is a world-class institute of interdisciplinary geospatial expertise in New Zealand by linking academia, government, and business. Its mission is to provide a national centre of gravity for geospatial research, in order to provide the underpinning research that enables New Zealand to more fully realise the benefits of spatial information technology.
