Description:

The scholarship supports postgraduate students in Computer Science at the University of Canterbury. 

Value/Benefits:
The scholarship provides financial assistance as follows:
• $2,000 for Honours students and Master's students doing a degree by coursework
• $7,000 for Master's thesis students
• $8,000 for PhD thesis students.

Level of Study: Honours; Master's; Doctoral

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 31 March (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date)

Tenure: One year

Number Available Annually: Up to four

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Must be enrolled, full-time or part-time, at the University of Canterbury in one of the following:
  • Final year in Honours degree programme in Computer Science; or
  • Master’s degree programme in Computer Science;or
  • PhD degree programme in Computer Science
Citizenship/residency requirements: Not applicable

Application Information:

Up to four scholarships are available annually, as follows:
  • Up to two scholarships are available to students who are either in the final year of a programme for an Honours degree or who are engaged in courses for a Master’s degree.
  • Up to two scholarships are available to students who are engaged in a thesis for a Master’s or PhD degree.


Special Eligibility Requirements:

Current and former recipients may also apply for new tenure of the scholarship.


Additional Information:

Dr G B Battersby made a generous gift to the University in 1987 to establish a trust fund "for the purpose of the advancement of learning in the computer field in New Zealand". Until 2019, to the income from the trust fund was added an annual grant, provided originally by Datacom Group and after 1996 by Trimble New Zealand. The Trimble grant was given in "recognition of the long service provided by the late Dr Battersby to the University and to the computing profession".
