The purpose of this scholarship is to support students intending to study at the University of Canterbury who face challenges that might otherwise prevent them from considering entry to tertiary education.

*If the 7th falls on a Friday or Saturday, the closing day will change as follows:
If it is a Friday, the closing date will shift to Thursday, 6th August
If it is a Saturday, the closing date will shift to Sunday, 8th August

The scholarship is tenable during full-time enrolment in the first year of an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury

Special Requirements:
Must have left secondary school not more than two years prior to commencing the first year of full-time study at the University of Canterbury, and must have resided continuously in the
Canterbury regional council area
for at least 12 months immediately preceding the closing date for applications, or preceding the start of a gap year. Preference will be given to applicants who have been educated within the Christchurch City territorial authority

Application Information:
Selection will be based on:
challenges faced in entering tertiary education, such as financial difficulty, or other personal circumstances; and
academic achievement; and
the likelihood of successful completion of the chosen programme of study.
Emphasis will be put on financial difficulty facing the applicant.
Special Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must:

Preference will be given to applicants who have been educated within the Christchurch City territorial authority.
Additional Information:
The scholarship was established in 2007 by a gift of $100,000 to the University of Canterbury Foundation, with the intention of providing, in perpetuity, a scholarship for first-year students. It records a significant financial legacy for charitable purposes received by the Rotary Club of Christchurch from one of its members, the late Jack Blackgrove.
The recipient will be expected to attend a meeting of the Rotary Club of Christchurch, at which the award of the scholarship will be acknowledged. Occasional attendance at other meetings of the Club may also be expected.
