Catherine was a University of Canterbury alumna who graduated from the University with a double bachelor’s degree in French and Art History in 1980, and then a master’s degree in French in 1981. Catherine met her future husband, Richard, at the University, and married in 1984, having completed teacher training at Christchurch Teacher’s Training College (later the UC College of Education, Health and Human Development).
