Brief Description:

To apply for this scholarship, please use the UC Incoming First-Year Scholarships 2026 application form. Applications open 12 June 2025 and close 7 August 2025.

The Nelson Science Scholarship was founded in memory of his wife Chrissie Mayo Evans and his mother Louisa Bishop Evans by an old boy of Nelson College who for some years was closely connected with Canterbury College.

The purpose of this scholarship is to support ex-pupils of Te Kura Tamatāne o Whakatū | Nelson College studying sciences at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Value/Benefits: Financial assistance at a value of $8,000 per annum for up to four years

Level of Study: Incoming First-Year Undergraduate

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 7 August (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date)

Tenure: Up to four years

Number Available Annually: At least two

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: The scholarship is tenable during full-time or part-time enrolment in a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and, if applicable, a BSc(Hons) and/or a Master of Science (MSc) at the University

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Not applicable

Special Requirements: Recipients must have been enrolled at Te Kura Tamatāne o Whakatū | Nelson College for not less than two years. Recipients, on 1 March of the year of tenure, must be at least 16 years old

Application Information:

Selection will be based on:
  1. academic achievement, especially in any three of the subjects Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, Mathematics, and Statistics;
  2. leadership potential; and
  3. involvement in sport, cultural, and/or community activities.


Special Eligibility Requirements:

Recipients must have been enrolled at Te Kura Tamatāne o Whakatū | Nelson College for not less than two years, and, on 1 March of the year of tenure, must be at least 16 years old



Additional Information:

The scholarship was founded in 1928 by Dr W P Evans, a distinguished early graduate of Canterbury College, who was Head of the Department of Chemistry and Physics at the College from 1903 to 1906, and Head of the Department of Chemistry from 1907 to 1922. In 1967, Dr Evans’s daughters, Miss CB Evans and Miss FM Evans, made further donations to the scholarship’s fund.
