Award Amount


The purpose of this scholarship is to support students at the University of Canterbury who are blind or have a significant visual impairment.

a. Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, at a value of $2,000

Level of Study: Undergraduate; Postgraduate

Closing Date: 5:00 pm (NZT) 31 March (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date)

Tenure: One year

Number Available Annually: One (only available in even-numbered years - please refer to "Application Information" for further details)

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Full-time enrolment in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Canterbury

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Not applicable

Special Requirements: Applicants must be blind, or have a significant visual impairment

Application Information:

The scholarship is available only in even-numbered years, to undergraduate and postgraduate students who are enrolled full-time at the University of Canterbury.

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must be blind or have significant visual impairment.

Applicants must have registered with the Equity and Disability Service as a student with significant visual impairment by the closing date for applications.

Applications will be accepted from current and former recipients of the scholarship.

Selection will be based on:
  1. academic achievement;
  2. community involvement; and
  3. the obstacles faced by the candidate in pursuing study, including financial need.

Additional Information:

This scholarship, along with the Marian D'Eve Memorial Scholarship, was established in 2009 by the family of Russell Smith and Marian D'Eve, following their tragic loss in August 2005. Both Dr Smith and Ms D'Eve were distinguished graduates of the University of Canterbury.

Dr Smith was a member of the University of Canterbury Council, a patron of the UC Foundation, and a former staff member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He was involved in the establishment of one of Canterbury's major electronics companies, HumanWare, which has an international reputation for Braille and speech technology , screen-reading software and video-magnification solutions.

In 2004 Dr Smith made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of his career dedicated to improving the lives of the visually impaired.
