Brief Description:

This scholarship is dedicated to supporting currently enrolled students at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury who wish to engage in immersive academic and cultural experiences in Taiwan. The purpose of the scholarship is to:

• Encourage students to deepen their understanding of Taiwanese society, language, and culture through meaningful, on-the-ground experiences.

• Provide financial support to ensure that capable and committed students are not held back from life-changing opportunities due to financial constraints.

• Allow for students with no connection to Taiwan to visit and immerse themselves in an experience there.

• Build a community of recipients who will embody Jessie’s values of intellectual curiosity, cross-cultural engagement, and academic excellence.

Confirmed to be on offer in round opening 1st September and closing 31st October 2026

Value/Benefits: Up to $2,000.

Level of Study: Undergraduate; Postgraduate

Closing Date: 31 March. If the available funds have not been fully utilised in the 31 March round, an additional round closing on 31 October may also be offered.

Tenure: One year.

Number Available Annually: At least one.

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Full- or part-time enrolment in any undergraduate or postgraduate programme at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Applicants must be citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Applicants must be able and intending to travel to Taiwan to support their academic studies.

The Chungwei Jessie Chu Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Chu-Tan family — Prof Alex Tan, Joshua, and Julian — in loving memory of Chungwei Jessie Chu, who passed away on 30 August 2024. Jessie’s life was a beacon of warmth, intellect, and generosity of spirit, and her passing leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved her. Jessie was known for her remarkable ability to make others feel instantly at ease — as though they had known her their entire lives. She possessed a deep and unrelenting curiosity about the world, always seeking to understand its complexities and our place within it. Her passion for knowledge, for people, and for meaningful connection inspired everyone around her. This scholarship is a tribute to Jessie’s enduring legacy and her commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. It seeks to continue the work she began — to inspire and support the next generation of thinkers, learners, and explorers.
