Brief Description:

The core focus of the Kelliher Economics Foundation (KEF) is to support the intellectual development of postgraduate students in the field of Economics and to advance research capacity in Economics in New Zealand. This scholarship aims to support this focus by providing assistance to students starting their postgraduate research studies in Economics at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Level of Study: Postgraduate

Tenure: Up to 240 points of enrolment.

Number Available Annually: One

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Full-time enrolment in a relevant Honours or Master’s programme majoring in Economics at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Applicants must be citizens of New Zealand or holders of New Zealand residence class visas.

Application Information:

For students commencing a postgraduate research degree, Honours or Master’s, in Economics in Semester 1:

Applications Open: 12:00am (NZT) 01 September
Application Deadline: 11:59pm (NZT) 31 October

If the scholarship is not awarded in the 31 October round, another application round will open in early February and close 11:59 pm (NZT) 31 March (for students planning on commencing their research Master’s studies in Economics in Semester 2)

Additional Information:

Sir Henry Joseph Kelliher, was born in 1896 into a pioneering farming family in Central Otago where he developed an enterprising spirit and abiding love of the land.

In 1921 Sir Henry set up Kelliher and Co, an exporter and trader in agricultural products. He went on to co-found Dominion Breweries and this was to remain his dominant business activity until 1982.

Sir Henry Kelliher was appointed to the Board of the Bank of New Zealand in 1938 where he developed a passion for encouraging a wider understanding of economics and effects of government economic policies in New Zealand, a passion that later led to him establishing the Kelliher Economics Foundation. Sir Henry received a Knighthood from the Queen in 1963 in recognition of his industrial leadership and philanthropy, and was also a Knight of the Order of St John.

In the same year as Sir Henry was knighted, he established the Sir Henry Kelliher Charitable Trust followed shortly thereafter with the Kelliher Economics Foundation. The Foundation aimed to “encourage young New Zealanders to study the working and effects of the monetary and economic system under which they live. In particular to understand the Reserve Bank’s role in achieving and maintaining a stable level of prices”.
