Additional Information:

Silvester/Clark Consulting Engineers and Steel Construction New Zealand established this scholarship in 2022, with equal contributions. It is in memory of Kevin Spring, who passed away in 2016, leaving a legacy of steel-designed buildings in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia. Kevin worked in consultancy for over 50 years and led the design or managed project teams on such notable projects as the Esanda building, Martin Place, Sydney, The Law Courts Building, Sydney, The Bank of New South Wales Building, Lambton Quay, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, the head office for the National Bank in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, the new 30-storey building for the Bank of New Zealand, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, the twin-tower National Bank Centre, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Mobil on the Park, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, New Zealand Steel Sponge Iron Plant, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, the New Zealand Aluminium Smelter Upgrade Project Potline 3C Building, and the Mega Centre, Porirua.

Kevin started the Silvester/Clark office in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington in 1999 (the company had started in Te Papa-i-Oea Palmerston North in 1979), after a distinguished career at some large consultancies. Thanks to Kevin’s reputation and contacts the firm has continued to grow, and it currently has around 75 staff in five centres in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The only steel plate shear wall building in Aotearoa New Zealand was designed by Kevin, and he was an advocate for the use of EBF braces with replaceable links.

Kevin sat on the Hera Executive for many years and was involved in the setup of Steel Construction New Zealand (SCNZ), under earlier names.

Kevin was involved with the development of seismic design procedures in Aotearoa New Zealand, chairing the NZSEE committee for the seismic design of structural steel. With a strong reputation in seismic design, Kevin was engaged to consult and report on the earthquake damage in Newcastle, Australia, and was a member of the Aotearoa New Zealand team that attended Northridge in Los Angeles immediately after the earthquake there.

Above all, Kevin was regarded as a leader amongst his peers and colleagues.
