Brief Description:

The purpose of this scholarship is to support research and teaching in Antarctic Studies in recognition of Antarctica as a continent devoted to "peace and research".

Value/Benefits: Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, to a value of $5,000

Closing Date: 5:00 pm (NZT) 30 April

Tenure: One year

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Must be enrolled in a Master's by thesis or Doctoral (PhD) programme at the University of Canterbury, in an Antarctic-related topic

Application Information:

There is no application form. Applicants must provide the following:
  • Research Proposal
  • Curriculum Vitae (including contact details)
  • Academic Transcript
  • Two letters of support
  • Name of supervisor or supervisors
  • Details of any other scholarships held
The research proposal should be no more than 3 pages long (12 point font) and should include an overview of the project, methodology, how the project fits in with the research programme of the primary supervisor, and also the Science Strategy for Antarctica, developed by Antarctica New Zealand.

Special Eligibility Requirements:

The scholar is required to undertake research concerning a matter of importance to the understanding of Antarctica or the Southern Ocean.

At least one of the scholar's supervisors of studies will be the Professor of Antarctic Studies (or nominee).

Additional Information:

The scholarship is known as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) Ross Dependency Scholarship, and the holder shall be known as the MFAT Ross Dependency Scholar.

The holder shall lodge with the Antarctic Policy Division, MFAT, a copy of any publication arising from the research undertaken during the tenure of the scholarship, and shall give due recognition to the donors in such publications.

The scholarship does not provide any guarantee of access to Antarctica. An applicant whose proposed research requires fieldwork in Antarctica must organise this through the primary supervisor prior to submitting the application.
