Both Dr Smith and Ms D'Eve were distinguished graduates of the University of Canterbury. Ms D’Eve was an early-childhood education specialist and author of a handbook for teachers. She was a staff member at the Christchurch College of Education, where she taught early childhood education, with a passion for the education of children with special needs.
