H J Hopkins Postgraduate Scholarship in Civil Engineering
Award Amount
$5,000 per annum + fees at the domestic rate (subject to conditions)

Description:

The scholarship shall be awarded to a student enrolled for a Master of Engineering (ME) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Canterbury.

Value/Benefits:
a. Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, to a value of $5,000; and
b. May also cover tuition fees at the New Zealand domestic rate, provided those fees are not being paid by another scholarship or award; and
c. During, or following the successful completion of the ME or PhD degree, an H J Hopkins Scholar may apply to the Selection Committee for funds to contribute towards the cost of travel, for the purpose of study or work in the field of civil engineering. The travel grant may be for an amount up to $5,000

Level of Study: Master's; Doctoral

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 15 October (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date)

Tenure: Up to 18 months for ME. Up to 3 years for PhD

Number Available Annually: One

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Must be enrolled full-time for a Master of Engineering (ME) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Canterbury

Applicants must submit a statement which indicates what he or she hopes to contribute to the field of civil engineering in his or her future career.

Additional Information:

The scholarship was established in 2002 with funds from the Hopkins Lecture Trust Fund. The scholarship is set up in memory of Professor H J Hopkins who was Head of the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Canterbury from 1951 to 1978.

The scholarship shall be awarded annually, subject to there being sufficient funds available in the trust fund, such availability being determined by the Hopkins Lecture Committee.
