Rātā Foundation Scholarship

$24,500 per 120 points of thesis enrolment

Brief Description:



The scholarship supports study towards a research doctoral degree at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha University of Canterbury by students from a funding region of the Rātā Foundation. Eligible applicants who have applied for a 'UC Doctoral Scholarship' are automatically considered for the Rātā Foundation Scholarship; no separate application is required.


Value/Benefits: Financial assistance at a value of $24,500 per 120 points of thesis enrolment.

Level of Study: Doctoral

Closing Date: Applications are made on the 'UC Doctoral Scholarship' form. Two application rounds each year:

  • May - for students planning to start before 1 June; opens 20 March, closes 15 May.
  • October - for students planning to start after 1st July; opens 20 August, closes 15 October.

Tenure: The scholarship is tenable for the period necessary to complete up to 360 points of enrolment.

Number Available Annually: Only one holder of the scholarship is possible at one time (NEXT OFFERED IN 2025). The scholarship is available to candidates from the following faculties in rotation:

(1) Toi Tangata | Arts,
(2) Pūkaha | Engineering (current),
(3) Pūtaiao | Science,
(4) the remaining faculties together.
 
Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: A programme for a research doctoral degree at the University.

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Candidates must have a permanent address in one of the four regions of the Rātā Foundation (Please refer to the regulations for details).

Additional Information:

The scholarship was established in 2020 to replace the Canterbury Community Trust Scholarship, following the renaming of the Trust as the Rātā Foundation. The latter scholarship had been established in 1995 by a gift from Trust Bank Canterbury Community Trust. In 1997, The Trust Bank Canterbury Community Trust changed its name to The Community Trust and in 2005 it became The Canterbury Community Trust.
