Brief Description:

The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students in Civil Engineering who face financial difficulty completing Third Year of a programme for a BE(Hons) at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Applicable enrolment during tenure: 
Open to students who are entering the third year of a programme for a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Civil Engineering at the University of Canterbury.

Citizenship/residency requirements: 
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or holders of New Zealand residence class visas.

Additional Information:

The Sutherland Charitable Trust established the scholarship in 2022, to replace the Norma and Norman Sutherland Scholarship in Civil Engineering, which the trust’s predecessor, the Norman and Norma Sutherland Charitable Trust, had founded in 2005.

Norman Sutherland attended the University of Canterbury Engineering School from 1946 to 1948, and thereafter became a prominent Ōtautahi Christchurch engineer with Royds and Sutherland, subsequently Royds Sutherland and McLeay, Consulting Engineers and Town Planners. Mr Sutherland retired in 1981 and died in 1984.

Norma Sutherland was involved in the fashion industry from the 1950s to the 1980s, and proceeds from her extensive personal clothes collection contributed to the Trust, following her death in 2003.
