UC Takere Scholarship (Incoming First-Year Scholarship)

Brief Description:

The UC Takere Scholarship supports Māori and Pacific students to successfully transition and flourish in university study and life at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury. The award is based on reciprocity and commitment for the successful participants, as well as for the University.

Level of Study: Incoming First-Year Undergraduate

Closing Date: An application for a 2026 UC Incoming First-Year Scholarship will be regarded as an application.

Tenure: One year

Number Available Annually: Up to thirty (30)

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: The scholarship is tenable during full-time enrolment in the first year of any undergraduate degree programme at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Applicants must be citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand or holders of Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visas. 

Special Requirements: Recipients must have whakapapa Māori and/or Pacific, be enrolled in the year following the year of application as a full-time, first-year student at UC

Recipients must commit to the Takere programme, including:
a.  participate in ongoing social, cultural and academic activities and compulsory workshops throughout the academic year.
b.  attend all one-on-one mentoring appointments. 
c.  engage in the UC Māori/Pacific leadership programme, Paihere, and other relevant kaupapa, including Tōia Mai noho marae for first-year ākonga | students, and Eke Panuku | Māori orientation;
d.  act as UC Māori/Pacific ambassadors;
e.  be involved with University publicity as appropriate.

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Recipients must have whakapapa Māori and/or Pacific, be enrolled for the 2023 year as a full-time, first-year student at UC and have financial need that would otherwise prevent them from being able to be in a UC Hall of Residence.

Recipients must commit to the Takere programme, including:
a.  participate in ongoing social, cultural and academic activities and compulsory workshops throughout the academic year.
b.  attend all one-on-one mentoring appointments. 
c.  engage in the UC Māori/Pacific leadership programme, Paihere, and other relevant kaupapa, including Tōia Mai noho marae for first-year ākonga | students, and Eke Panuku | Māori orientation;
d.  act as UC Māori/Pacific ambassadors;
