The UC Tūāpapa Māori Scholarship is a distinguished scholarship that recognises exceptional academic excellence, leadership, and scholarly potential. It celebrates ākonga Māori who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement alongside leadership and community contribution, and seeks to cultivate a cohort of high-achieving ākonga who will contribute to the intellectual, cultural and social life of UC Māori and Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Level of Study during Tenure: Incoming First-Year Undergraduate

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 7 August* (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date.)

*If the 7th falls on a Friday or Saturday, the closing day will change as follows:

If it is a Friday, the closing date will shift to Thursday, 6th August
If it is a Saturday, the closing date will shift to Sunday, 8th August

Tenure: One year

Number Available Annually: Determined annually

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: The scholarship is tenable during the first year of full-time study in an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Must be a citizen of Aotearoa New Zealand, or hold an Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visa

Special Requirements: Must have whakapapa Māori

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must:

have whakapapa Māori; and
be New Zealand citizens; OR
be holders of New Zealand residence class visas.

Applicants must not have been enrolled in a degree programme at any tertiary institute.*

Applicants must be intending to enrol full-time in an undergraduate degree programme at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury in the year following the year of application.

* Applicants may not have also studied Level 5 Certificates and Diplomas at a tertiary institute.

Miscellaneous:

This scholarship was established in 2026. It replaced the UC Takere Scholarship.
