Go Waitaha Canterbury Scholarship (Incoming First-Year Scholarship)
Award Amount
$15,000 for fees at a university hall and priority consideration for a place in a hall, + educational development programme

Brief Description:

This scholarship supports students from outside the Greater Christchurch area in their first year of study at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury while residing at a hall of residence recognised by the University.
 
Value/Benefits:
a. Assistance with fees for accommodation at a hall of residence recognised by the University, at a value of $15,000, and priority consideration for a place in a hall.
b. At no cost, the opportunity to participate in the Te Kakau a Māui Programme, a bespoke mentoring and development programme.
c. At no cost, educational outdoor recreational field trips showcasing the UC campus and Ōtautahi Christchurch lifestyle in Waitaha Canterbury, organised by the University in the first year of study.
d. At no cost, a range of workshops and seminars organised by the University for personal, academic, and professional development.

Level of Study: Incoming First-Year Undergraduate

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 15 August (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date.)

Tenure: One year

Number Available Annually: 90

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: The scholarship is tenable during full-time enrolment for a full year in any programme at the University. The scholarship must be taken up in Semester One of the year following the year of application.

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Not applicable

Special Requirements: In the year of application (or in the previous year if on a gap year), applicants must be attending a school and/or living outside the Greater Christchurch area.

Application Information:

At least two scholarships are reserved for each of the following:
  • students who whakapapa Māori
  • students who identify as Pacific
  • students who identify as Rainbow
  • students who identify as disabled; and
  • students who will be registering with the University's Te Ratonga Whaikaha | Student Accessibility Service.
Applicants are required to provide a confidential reference in support of the selection criteria (as outlined below, and in the regulations).

Selection will be based on:
  1. potential to benefit from a Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury education;
  2. commitment to creating positive change in the world:
  3. engagement with the community that will benefit from the desired positive change in the world; and
  4. potential to benefit from the development opportunities offered by the scholarship shown in clause 6.1 of the regulations.


Special Eligibility Requirements:

In the year of application (or in the previous year if on a gap year), applicants must be attending a school and/or living outside the Greater Christchurch area.

Applicants must be eligible to receive StudyLink Student Allowance and recipients must be in receipt of a Student Allowance.



Additional Information:

The University established the scholarship in 2020 to replace the Go Canterbury Scholarship, which the University and a previous accommodation partner had established in 2015. In 2024 the eligibility for the scholarship was extended to anyone not living or studying in Greater Christchurch immediately prior to coming to UC.
