Additional Information:

The scholarships were established in 2021 thanks to the generosity of distinguished Malaysian alumnus Ngau Boon Keat and the support of DIALOG Fitzroy Engineering Ltd, New Plymouth. They replace the Fitzroy Engineering University of Canterbury Engineering Scholarship, which had been established in 2013. Tan Sri Dr Ngau grew up in Malaysia, and graduated from Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury in 1971 with a BE in Mechanical Engineering. After working for Mobil Oil in Singapore, in 1975 he joined Malaysia’s newly formed national oil and gas company, Petronas. Tan Sri Dr Ngau co-founded (in 1984), and became Executive Chairman of, DIALOG Group, one of Malaysia’s leading listed companies, which provides services to the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries around the world. With his wife Jean Ngau he co-founded the charity MyKasih, which provides food aid, health awareness and financial literacy programmes, children’s education, and skills training programmes to less-fortunate Malaysians. Tan Sri Dr Ngau was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering by Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury in April 2012.

Established in the late 1950s, Fitzroy Engineering Ltd was purchased by DIALOG Group in 2011 and is now rebranded as DIALOG Fitzroy Ltd. It has become one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest heavy fabrication and multi-disciplined engineering companies, forging a reputation for its ability to successfully deliver complex engineering scopes.
