This scholarship assists and encourages students studying Civil or Environmental Engineering at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury to complete their engineering degree and make a difference for future generations.

Value/Benefits:
a. $10,000 per annum

b. Provided a suitable position is available, Transwaste Canterbury Ltd may offer the recipient paid employment during the summer vacations during tenure.

c. Where possible and relevant, mentoring opportunities.

Level of Study during Tenure: Undergraduate

Closing Date:11:59 pm (NZT) 31 March (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date.)

Tenure: Up to three years

Number Available Annually: Normally, there may be only one holder of the scholarship at a time. The scholarship is advertised as it becomes available.

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Full-time enrolment in Second Year of a BE(Hons) programme specialising in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering.

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Applicants must be Aotearoa New Zealand citizens or holders of Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visas.

Additional Information:

Gareth James was a highly regarded and well recognized civil engineer who later in his professional career developed a special interest and expertise in solid waste management, focusing on the development and operation of major landfills and associated transport requirements. In particular, Gareth had a focus on the extraction of further value from solid waste streams in the form of landfill gas capture and utilization of that gas as an energy source.
Gareth conceived of, designed and built, and then oversaw the operation of, the Canterbury Regional Landfill at Kate Valley, an early and sustained example of use of a pure Public/Private Partnership model to provide essential infrastructure to a widespread community. The vehicle for this is Transwaste Canterbury Ltd, the Company that owns and operates the Kate Valley Landfill and Gareth James Energy Park.  The Landfill and Energy Park, conceived of by Gareth, together with the development of an associated conservation estate, commenced operations in 2005, and has the potential to serve the solid waste disposal needs of Canterbury for many decades to come. The Kate Valley Landfill and Gareth James Energy Park is recognized nationally and internationally as an exemplar of best practice solid waste management.
