The prize is for an essay on a specified topic relating to constructive policy to promote and preserve international peace and goodwill.

Tenure: Not applicable

Number Available Annually: One

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Applicants must:

a. be undergraduates of the University of Canterbury; or

b. have become eligible to graduate from the University with their first degree not more than 12 months before the closing date for applications for the current round.

2024 Essay Topic(s):

1. The development of lethal autonomous weapons (LAWs), including AI-equipped drones, is accelerating. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has previously called for their prohibition, under international law. What is the potential role of small nation-states, like New Zealand, in advocating for LAWs regulations and restrictions?

2. In the face of increasing global instability, compare the contemporary threat environment to the Cold War and set out an approach for New Zealand to promote peace.
