The scholarship supports Fourth Year BE(Hons) students minoring in Power Engineering at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury to complete their degree programmes.

Value/Benefits: $2,000.

Tenure: One year.

Number Available Annually: One

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Full-time enrolment in the Fourth Year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree programme with a minor in Power Engineering.

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Applicants must be citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand or holders of Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visas.

Kelvin Lewis Scholarship

UC Alum Kelvin Lewis’s educational pathway wasn’t a traditional one. He got a late start in his schooling because his mother was reluctant to let her 6-year-old walk two kilometres to and from school each day. He lost another year of schooling, along with much of his hearing, to a long and debilitating illness at age 14. When he finally graduated high school, Kelvin’s family needed him to work, so University was not a viable option. Instead, he entered the world of engineering through an apprenticeship. It wasn’t until age 42 that Kelvin enrolled at UC, graduating in 1975 with a degree in electrical engineering. Just shy of his 95th birthday, he established the Kelvin Lewis Scholarship to help provide a bit of extra assistance to students who might be struggling, saying “I want to make sure they have an easier time getting an education than I did.”
