This scholarship supports research master’s students in Engineering at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Level of Study: Master's

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 31 October in odd-numbered years only

Tenure: Up to the points value of the qualifying programme for an ME degree.

Number Available Annually: One (every odd-numbered year)

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: ME degree in Chemical and Process Engineering, Civil
Engineering (including Natural Resources Engineering),
Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or Mechanical
Engineering.

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Applicants must be Aotearoa New Zealand citizens or holders of Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visas.

Application Information:

Applications are accepted only in odd-numbered years. The scholarship is not tenable by students in a programme for any specialist master’s degree in Engineering, such as the MEFE and the MET.


Additional Information:

 (Francis Small (1946−2021) established the scholarship in 2015 to enable others to study for master’s degrees in Engineering and to experience the opportunities that such study creates for them. Dr Small graduated from Te Whare Wānanga o Tāmaki Makaurau | University of Auckland with an ME in Civil Engineering (in 1969) and then with a PhD. A successful career followed, and he became Managing Director of New Zealand Rail and Trans Rail Ltd and served as President of IPENZ and Chair of the Centre for Advanced Engineering. The award’s funds are administered by the Engineering New Zealand Foundation..
