Additional Information:
The scholarship was established in 2012 from a bequest of Mrs Judith Pownall (nee Whittaker), widow of Leigh Pownall, for the “advancement of education” in Geography and Music at the University. Leigh Pownall was Professor of Geography at the University, and is considered “the father of urban geography in New Zealand”. He became the University’s youngest vice-chancellor in 1961 and led the University with great efficiency until 1966, during a period of enormous growth. The strength and standing of the University today are considered to be “a tribute to the legacy of Dr Pownall’s tenure as vice-chancellor”. Dr and Mrs Pownall were married for 65 years, lived happily in Christchurch for 22 years, and shared a keen lifetime interest in music and the arts. They had a wide circle of friends and worked tirelessly together to improve and cement the relationship between the University and the city.
