Brief Description:

This scholarship is co-funded by UC and an external agency - Earth Sciences NZ to support students for study towards a research doctoral degree in the following research topic at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Research Topic: Using extremophilic microorganisms as biomarkers in groundwater for the discovery, monitoring and modelling of low-temperature geothermal systems.  

This PhD project will develop innovative methods to identify and monitor New Zealand’s low-temperature geothermal systems using extremophilic microorganisms as natural biomarkers. By combining microbial ecology, hydrogeochemistry, and groundwater modelling, the research aims to improve the discovery and management of geothermal resources for applications such as horticulture, aquaculture, and industry.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in microbial ecology and diversity, bioinformatics, and geochemistry. Knowledge of modelling and biogeochemical interactions are beneficial, and experience with working with Indigenous communities, and an understanding of Indigenous knowledge and data sovereignty would be considered highly desirable.
