The UC Civil and Natural Resources Engineering PhD Scholarship supports students to study towards a research doctoral degree in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

UC has one of the best engineering schools in the World. New Zealand offers its visitors a plethora of opportunities for the life-work balance including hard-to-match outdoor activities (ranging from surfing to skiing) and breath-taking landscapes. Christchurch –Otautahi– is a diverse, welcoming and affordable city. The CNRE Doctoral Scholarships available for 2024/2025 are for $30,000/$32,000 per year for up to 3 years, plus domestic tuition fees. Payments will start after official enrolment as a postgraduate student at the University of Canterbury.

Value/Benefits: A stipend during thesis enrolment plus tuition fees for thesis enrolment only, at the Aotearoa New Zealand domestic rate.

Tenure: The scholarships are tenable for the period necessary to complete up to 360 points of enrolment.

Number Available Annually: Determined annually

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Full- or part-time enrolment in a PhD programme at University of Canterbury in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering.

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: None

Special Requirements: Recipients must be undertaking doctoral research in association with the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering.

Closing Date: Applications shall be submitted by 5 PM, May 17, 2024, New Zealand Standard Time NZST. Applicants submitting prior to March 29, 2024, will be considered in an initial evaluation round for early scholarship offers.

Application Information:

The Department of Civil and Natural Resources of the University of Canterbury UC, Christchurch, New Zealand, is soliciting applications for PhD scholarships. 

To apply for the CNRE Doctoral Scholarship you will require the following:

1.   Research Area: Applicants are required to identify the general area(s) of interest for their study from the list provided on our website https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/engineering/schools/cnre/research/.

2.   Supervisor: Applicants should identify 2-3 potential supervisors from the CNRE website working in their areas of interest. This can be done by viewing staff profiles at the CNRE “Contact Us” webpage (Contact the Civil and Natural Resources Engineering Department | University of Canterbury).

Although not compulsory, students are encouraged to indicate a preferred supervisor. Evidence of contact with a potential supervisor, such as email communication or a support letter confirming their availability and support of your application may be submitted with your CNRE scholarship application.

3.  Curriculum Vitae: A CV of up to three pages. This should include academic history, work history, and any relevant research experience.

4.  Research: A one-page essay on research interests, research experience, and motivations

5.  Academic Documents: Transcripts from Bachelor and MS degrees (where applicable). Please ensure that the scan includes a description of the university grading scale. For an MS degree in progress, students are encouraged to submit their transcript to-date.

6.  Evidence of English Language Proficiency: A description of suitable evidence can be found here: English language proficiency | University of Canterbury

7.  References: A list of at least two academic references, including contact information (phone number and email address)

The scholarship will be conditional on meeting all criteria for admission and enrolment on a full-time basis, including English Language proficiency and visa requirements. Applicants should check they can meet the admission requirements prior to making a CNRE scholarship application, but do not need to have applied for admission.

Students on admission to the university will also become eligible for consideration of the centrally administered UC Doctoral Scholarship. Students awarded both a UC Doctoral Scholarship and CNRE Doctoral Scholarship must select the UC Doctoral Scholarship as their preferred choice.

Scholarships are due to start 1 January 2025. However, students may be able to start earlier, by agreement. Commencement of studies for international students shall be constrained by regulations imposed by Immigration New Zealand. Visit their website to learn about current immigration requirements.
