UC Kaitoko Pacific Scholarship (Incoming First-Year)

$7,500 + UC-sponsored leadership programme

Brief Description:

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognise high academic achievement, as well as leadership potential and involvement in Pacific community and/or Pacific cultural activities, amongst intending first-year Pacific students at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Level of Study during Tenure: Incoming First-Year Undergraduates

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 15 August (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date.)

Tenure: One year

Number Available Annually: Twenty

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: The scholarship is tenable during the first year of full-time study in an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Must be a citizen of Aotearoa New Zealand or Australia, or hold an Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visa, or be an international student studying at secondary level in New Zealand

Special Requirements: Must be Pacific

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must be:
  • Pacific; and
  • New Zealand or Australian citizens; or
  • holders of New Zealand residence class visas; or
  • international students studying at secondary level in New Zealand.
Applicants must not have been enrolled in a degree programme at any tertiary institute.*

*Participation in STAR courses, community education courses offered by tertiary institutions, orientation or general interest programmes run by tertiary institutions for secondary school students does not preclude eligibility for this award.

Selection will be based on:
  1. quality of achievement at NCEA Level 2, or equivalent university entrance qualification (achievement must be at least NCEA Level 2 at Merit level or equivalent);
  2. evidence of leadership potential;
  3. involvement in Pacific community and/or Pacific cultural activities;
  4. evidence of applicant's participation in, and contribution to, the development of Pacific/Pasifika peoples and the aspirations of their communities; and
  5. strategic objectives of the University.
