Pōhā Iti Bursary
Award Amount
Up to $3,000
Description:
Purpose
The Pōhā Iti Bursary assists all SAC eligible students who would otherwise be unable to continue their studies due to financial hardship.
Background
UC is aware that the current situation regarding Covid-19 may have caused additional financial pressure for some students. As a result, you may:
•Have lost your job or have had your employment hours reduced
•Be struggling to cover your rent or hall/accommodation fees
•Be worrying how or unable to pay utility bills or cover grocery expenses
•Be unable to pay your child care costs
UC is providing bursaries to assist students experiencing financial difficulties so they are able to successfully continue and complete their studies in 2022.
A pōhā is a kelp bag that was used traditionally, and still is used today, for preserving meat and birds such as tītī (muttonbird) for extended periods of time. Just as this financial support offered to UC domestic students provides an opportunity for ākonga to receive incremental payments, can be likened to the idea that pōhā can hold several birds but we only take them out, one bird at a time, as we need to access them for sustenance.
Value and tenure
Up to 100 bursaries of $3,000 each are available in 2022 to domestic students and international doctoral (PhD) students and are intended to assist student with their living expenses. Unfortunately bursaries cannot be awarded to pay for tuition fees.
Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must:
•Be a currently enrolled student
•Be a part time or full time domestic student (UG, PG, PhD) or an international doctoral student studying towards a PhD or equivalent
•Be currently in New Zealand
•Demonstrate that you are require assistance as a result of the coronavirus outbreak
