Additional Information:

The award was founded by Arthur Sims (1877–1969) and Agnes Marian (Nancy) Sims (née Todd) who in 1941 made provision of a fund of £10,000 to establish a scholarship or scholarships to commemorate the late Baron Rutherford of Nelson. Sir Arthur was a student of Canterbury College who graduated in 1902 with an MA in Chemistry with first class honours and received an honorary LLD through Canterbury University College in 1955. He was a prominent industrialist and cricketer. Both Sir Arthur and Lady Sims are remembered for their philanthropy. Ernest Rutherford, 1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson, OM, FRS, HonFRSE, Nobel Laureate (1871–1937), was a student of Canterbury College (BA, MA, BSc) who came to be known as the father of nuclear physics. In 1993 the estate of Sir Arthur and Lady Sims’s daughter, Mrs Nancy Margaret Graeme Black (1919−1989), contributed to the scholarship’s fund.
