Description:

The purpose of this scholarship is to support undergraduate Engineering students at the University of Canterbury, with preference given to those who did not come to university directly from school, but who worked in the intervening period.

Value/Benefits: Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, at a value of $2,000

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 31 March (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date)

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Full-time enrolment in the School of Engineering at the University of Canterbury, in any Professional Year of a programme for a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours degree (BE(Hons))

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Not applicable

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Please note:
  1. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in the School of Engineering at the University of Canterbury, in any Professional Year of a programme for a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours degree (BE(Hons)).
  2. Applications will be accepted from students who came directly to university from secondary school, but preference will be given to those who did not come to university directly from school and who worked in the intervening period.
  3. Applicants who are previous holders of the scholarship will be given equal consideration with new applicants.

Selection will be based on:
  1. ability to write clearly in English; and
  2. any history of not having come to university directly from school, and of having worked in the intervening period.
The Dean (or nominee) will also consider academic achievement, but will give this criterion less weighting than the first two criteria.

Additional Information:

The scholarship supports undergraduate Engineering students at the University of Canterbury. It commemorates the service to the University of J E C Shearer, Librarian of the School of Engineering from its move to Ilam in 1962, until Mr Shearer's death in 1979. Mr Shearer's widow, Doreen Shearer, established the scholarship in 1995.
