UC Mathematics and Statistics High Achievers Award
Award Amount


The purpose of this scholarship is to recognise and support high-achieving students at the University of Canterbury who are entering their first year of a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programme and majoring in Data Science, Financial Engineering, Mathematics, or Statistics.

a. Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, at a value of $2,000

Level of Study: School Leaver (First year undergraduate)

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 15 August (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date)

Tenure: One year

Number Available Annually: Five, one of which is reserved for a Māori or Pasifika student

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Must be enrolled full-time in a programme for a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree at the University of Canterbury with:
  • a major in Data Science and an enrolment in MATH 102 and STAT 101; or
  • a major in Financial Engineering and an enrolment in MATH 103 and STAT 101; or
  • a major in Mathematics and an enrolment in MATH 103; or
  • a major in Statistics and an enrolment in STAT 101
Recipients who have completed MATH 199 are exempt from enrolling in MATH 102 or MATH 103

Special Requirements: Must have completed, or be completing, a university entrance qualification and have studied at secondary level in New Zealand in the year of application (or, in the case of a gap year, in the year immediately prior), either (1) in New Zealand, or (2) overseas at Te Aho o Te Kura. International students who meet these requirements are eligible to apply
