Brief Description:

These scholarships are offered to students enrolled in undergraduate Greek and Latin courses at the University of Canterbury.

Value/Benefits: Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, at a value of $2,500

Tenure: One year

Number Available Annually: Two

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: An undergraduate or postgraduate programme in classical literature.

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Not applicable

Applications are accepted from previous recipients of the scholarship, and are given equal consideration with applications from those who have not held the scholarship before.

Additional Information:

Austin Henry Alabaster, Esq., who died in 1920, bequeathed to Canterbury College the sum of 1,000 pounds subject to a life interest in that sum to his wife, Mrs Janet Stuart Alabaster, for the endowment of scholarships in classical literature in memory of his father, the Rev. Charles Alabaster, Master of Arts of Lincoln College, University of Oxford. In 1934, Mrs Alabaster surrendered her interest in this sum and directed that it should forthwith be paid to Canterbury University College.
