Description:

The prize is for an essay on a specified topic relating to constructive policy to promote and preserve international peace and goodwill.

Value/Benefits: Financial assistance at a value of $1,500

Level of Study: Undergraduate and Postgraduate 

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 30 September (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date)

Tenure: Not applicable

Number Available Annually: One

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Applicants must:

a. be undergraduates of the University of Canterbury; or

b. have become eligible to graduate from the University with their first degree not more than 12 months before the closing date for applications for the current round.

Essay Topic(s): Please choose ONE of the following essay topics to write your essay on: 

1) Economic development, nationally and globally, requires peace and security. Write an essay on the role of small nation-states, like New Zealand, in promoting these values.

Or

2) In 2023, the risk of nuclear weapons use became higher than at any time since the Cold War. Explain what roles a small nation-state such as New Zealand can play in mitigating these risks.

(The total length must not exceed 3,000 words)
