The Ensom Prize is awarded annually for an essay on a specified topic relating to constructive policy to promote and preserve international peace and goodwill.

Application Information:

Applicants must submit an essay on a topic that is advertised two months before the closing date, both here and by the Department of Political Science and International Relations. The topic of the essay reflects the donor's instruction that the prize must go to the best essay advocating a constructive policy for the promotion and preservation of international peace and goodwill, and the discontinuance of armaments and of special means of coercion against races or classes of people or on some phase of these subjects calculated to draw forth arguments against the use of military air or naval force.

Essays must be typed and of no more than 3,000 words in length.

Essay Topics for 2020:

1) "Anthony Carmona, a former judge of the International Criminal Court, said; “Peace and security of our planet must be based on the collective action of all nations, not a few, however powerful they may be.” Examine and evaluate this statement in light of contemporary events in international politics."

2) "Economic nationalism and protectionism have become increasing popular globally and New Zealand is certainly no exception. Why should New Zealand be concerned about this trend -- both globally and domestically? What can small states, like New Zealand, do to contain the effects of economic nationalism and protectionism?"

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Open to current undergraduate students or students who have become eligible to graduate from the University with their first degree no more than 12 months before the closing date for applications for the current round.
