Stan and Jessie Holland Memorial Scholarship in Ecology and Environmental Science

Description:

This scholarships supports Māori and Pasifika postgraduate research students in Ecology or Environmental Science at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Value/Benefits: Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, to a value of $21,000 per annum

Level of Study: Master's and doctoral

Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 1 November (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date)

Tenure: Master's students: One year; PhD students: Up to three years

Number Available Annually: There may be only two holders of the scholarship at a time: normally one master's student and one PhD student. In 2020 only a master's scholarship will be available.

Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Full-time enrolment in a programme for a research master’s or PhD degree in Ecology or Environmental Science.

Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Not applicable

Special Requirements: Applicants must have whakapapa Māori and/or be Pasifika.

Application Information:

In any year, there may be only two holders of the scholarship. Normally, one scholarship for a master’s student is available annually, and one scholarship for a PhD student is available approximately every three years. The scholarship for master’s students is advertised annually, and the scholarship for PhD students is advertised as it becomes available. In 2020 only the master's scholarship will be available.

Applicants must have whakapapa Māori and/or be Pasifika.



Additional Information:

The scholarship was established in 2020 on receipt of a bequest from Peter George Holland (1939–2019). Emeritus Professor Holland was a graduate from and an adjunct member of staff of the University. He had a long association with the New Zealand Geographical Society and was elected Honorary Life Fellow in 2013. The scholarship has been endowed in the memory of his parents, Stan and Jessie Holland, by their eldest son.
