Additional Information:
Mrs Alison MacGibbon established the award in 1974 in memory of her husband, William Smith MacGibbon (c. 1891–1962). Mrs MacGibbon attended Canterbury College School of Art in 1918. In 1976, she bequeathed to the University a major gift of oil paintings, watercolours, and prints, which formed the W.S. & Alison MacGibbon Collection. William Smith MacGibbon was born in Edinburgh and came to Aotearoa New Zealand as a child. An accountant and businessman, he served on the Christchurch City Council, and he was involved in a variety of civic affairs and charitable organisations, including the Canterbury Society of Arts (CSA). He was awarded an OBE in 1952 for his work.
